The statue of Swami Vivekananda planned in the capital will be a bronze replica of the one at the Vivekananda Rock in Kanyakumari. Vivekananda is the latest in the list of personalities to be honoured with a statue here.
The statue, jointly planned by the Bharatiya Vichara Kendram and the Ramakrishna Math, will find a place inside the children’s park at Kowdiar Junction. The BJP parliamentary party leader in the Corporation, P Ashok Kumar, had presented a resolution in this regard in the Corporation Council the other day.
‘’The Centre has allocated money to the Ramakrishna Math to install the statue. It will be in bronze and work will begin as soon as the Corporation issues the necessary orders,’’ Ashok Kumar said.
The statue will mark the 150th birth anniversary celebrations of the seer which is underway nationwide. During the state-level inauguration of the celebrations, the Ramakrishna Math had requested that a statue of Vivekananda be erected in the city.
As a young sanyasin, he had visited Thiruvananthapuram during his many journeys.
During the past one year, statues of freedom fighter Annie Mascrene, former chief ministers R Shankar and K Karunakaran and actors Sathyan and Prem Nazir were planned at various road junctions. They all got entangled in controversies after complaints arose that statues would hamper road traffic and future development of junctions.
Kerala High Court, passing an order on a case related to the installation of Sundaran Nadar’s statue at Neyyatinkara, also had urged that statues should be avoided on junctions and medians as far as possible.
