Bhopal: Harassed and disappointed, five students accused of cheating in the Vyapam pre-medical test have written to President Pranab Mukherjee to allow them to end their lives.
The students were cleared by a state level probe, but were labelled as Vyapam accused by their college authorities. After facing humiliation by teachers and fellow students, the five allegedly accused students have appealed to the President seeking permission for euthanasia.
"Right now, we are either failed by our college, or we are suspended. Our future looks bleak. That's why we have written a letter to the President asking for permission to undergo euthanasia," a student said.
"Before we even enter our college, we have to verify our documents with each department. Even after doing that I don't know why they are doing this to us," another student said.
With nearly 49 deaths so far, the Madhya Pradesh Vyapam scam has emerged as the deadliest scam in the Indian history. From the death of the son of Governor Ram Naresh Yadav to the sudden demise of journalist Akshay Singh, the scam has often grabbed headlines for alleged mysterious deaths.
Vyapam which stands for Vyavsayik Pareeksha Mandal, is also known as Madhya Pradesh Professional Examination Board. The scam dates back to 2007, but it came to light at least four years later.
Alleged financial and administrative irregularities were first found by the Madhya Pradesh Local Fund Audit office. These irregularities included unauthorised disposal of application forms worth crores of rupees.
MPPEB officials allegedly rigged eligibility tests for courses and recruitments, including medical entrance tests and government employment. Several aspirants for government employment as police constables, teachers, banking officials, etc are believed to have been beneficiaries of this scam. It is believed that bribe amounting to over Rs 2000 crore was exchanged.
While 2000 people have been arrested, search is on for 700 others. Madhya Pradesh government initially formed SIT for investigation in 2012. Another SIT was constituted for probe by the Madhya Pradesh High Court in November 2014.
Of the 49 Vyapam-linked deaths, the first took place on November 21, 2009 when Vikas Singh Thakur, an alleged middleman, died due to illness and adverse drug reaction.
