New Delhi: The Congress while accepting defeat in the Bihar Assembly polls on Tuesday said the results will have no adverse impact on the UPA government at the Centre.

The Congress also insisted that the outcome should be seen in the local perspective.

Congress, which aligned with the RJD and the CPI-M among others in the Bihar polls, was elated over the victory of their candidates?Priya Dutt and Narayna Rane in the Maharashtra by-polls.

Congress spokesperson Anand Sharma admitted that the party suffered because of the RJD but claimed that Lalu Prasad still remained a leader in his own right despite the defeat of his party.

Sharma said another reason for their defeat was the division of the secular forces. "If LJP leader Ram Vilas Paswan and the CPI had been with us, the results would have been different".

In a strongly worded assertion Sharma ridiculed those who think that "the Bihar results would give a Bada jhatka (great setback) to the UPA government".

"This is true that the people of Bihar wanted a change. We accept it. But let us not mix the local conditions with national politics," Sharma said.

Congress General Secretary Ambika Soni maintained that the Congress alliance with the RJD, NCP and CPI-M was quite strong. "This alliance will remain intact".

She said the party would analyse the results to find out why this alliance could not fare well.

Soni, refused to comment on Paswan's comment that his party's main objective was to get the RJD defeated. "He has his own views and my party also has its own views," she said.

She also emphasised that the Bihar results would have no ramifications for the UPA government at the centre.
