CHENNAI: Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on Friday allocated Rs 380 crore for upgrading the Nagapattinam port as an all-weather, deep water, direct berthing, greenfield port on a public-private partnership basis.The port can candle 10 lakh tonnes of cargo in the first year of its operations after the upgradation and will net a revenue of Rs 20 crore, an official release here said and added that in the 25th year of its operations, the port can handle 60 lakh tonnes of cargo annually and the revenue expected to be generated would be about Rs 120 crore.Factories located around the area will get the essential link to the port after the upgradation. Besides, the move would create additional employment opportunities and economic growth in these areas, the release added.The facilities at the port include wharves, stacking area, cargo sheds, passenger terminal station, weigh bridge and slipway.Chennai Petroleum Corporation Ltd. have constructed a jetty within the port limits to handle crude oil required for their refinery at Panangudi. South India Edibles are importing copra cake through the port.
