At a Lok Adalat conducted by the TN State Legal Services Authority on Wednesday, an award for Rs 48.61 lakh was passed for the death of a seaman in harness.
The Adalat, presided over by Justice Malai Subramanian (retired) and two other members, passed the award on an application from S Rajayoham, father, and R Mallika, mother, of Rajayoham Prasad of Ammapatti Bodinayakanur in Theni, who died in an accident in the course of his employment on board motor vessel TAIJU near Japan on December 13, 2011. The parents lodged their claims before the TNSLSA and even though the accident took place outside India, the vessel owners appeared before the Adalat and agreed to pay Rs 48.61 lakh to the claimants.
The amount was divided in two equal shares and the demand drafts for Rs 24.30 lakh each were presented by TNSLSA Executive Chairman to Justice Elipe Dharma Rao at his chambers.
