Frankfurt: Time is running out for football fans to get their hands on tickets for the 2006 World Cup with 84 percent of match tickets already sold.
German organisers confirmed that 2.6 million tickets had been sold for the finals, running from June 9 until July 9, leaving 470,000 tickets on offer to the general public.
"With the end of the third sales phase, 2.6 million of the approximately 3 million available tickets have been sold," revealed Horst R Schmidt, vice-president of the organising committee.
"Around 1.1 million tickets have gone to customers around the world through the official website www.FIFAworldcup.com."
The fourth of the five sales phases begins on February 15 with tickets allocated on a 'first come first served' basis.
Applicants who fail to secure tickets for the 64 World Cup matches will be informed by e-mail while those who are successful will have their tickets dispatched six to eight weeks before the tournament.
Ticket prices range from 35 euros to 600 euros but demand has far outstripped supply.
Black market tickets have surfaced on online auction site ebay with prices for the knockout stages already hiked up by thousands of euros.
