New Delhi: Justice Sarosh Homi Kapadia was sworn in as the new Chief Justice of India (CJI) on Wednesday.
He takes over the post of Chief Justice of India from Justice K G Balakrishnan.
Justice Kapadia made a humble beginning at the Bombay bar as an advocate in 1974, working his way up to the highest judicial office in the country.
Sixty-two-year-old Kapadia is the 38th Chief Justice of India.
Kapadia as an advocate at the Bombay high court dealt mainly with commercial law
In 1991, he was elevated as judge to the Bombay High Court.
Between 1993 and 1999 justice Kapadia served as a special judge dealing with cases pertaining to securities offences.
He was subsequently appointed Chief Justice, Uttaranchal High Court in 2003 and then made a Supreme Court judge.
Public finance, theoretical physics, Hindu and Buddhist philosophies are justice Kapadia’s other interests.
On the eve of his taking over the top job, Justice Kapadia had said that integrity is his only asset and that will be his biggest challenge to restore 'judicial integrity' at a time when some in the top echelons of the judiciary battle allegations of corruption.
