New Delhi: Union Home Secretary Anil Goswami has been sacked for trying to interfere in the multi-crore Saradha chit fund scam probe and stopping the arrest of a senior Congress leader. He was sacked by the Narendra Modi government on Wednesday night.
Goswami has been named by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for allegedly attempting to stall former union minister and Congress leader Matang Sinh's arrest in connection with the Saradha chit fund scam.
According to sources, Goswami called up some CBI officials to prevent Matang Sinh's arrest.
According to sources, the Centre asked Goswami to clarify why he interfered in the scam probe. A CBI Joint Director level officer is also under the scanner in the scam.
On Tuesday the CBI informed the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) about an attempt by Goswami to stall Sinh's arrest in the Saradha scam. Sinh had been arrested a week back for alleged criminal conspiracy, cheating and misappropriation of funds related to Saradha Realty, one of the companies of the group which is being probed by the agency.
Sources informed that Sinh was called to the headquarter of Special Investigation Team in Kolkata where he was grilled by the team for over five hours before being arrested. Sinh also, allegedly, named many bureaucrats and reportedly, claimed he influenced them for many benefits including favourable postings.
CBI sources said he was arrested as he was not cooperating with the investigation team on some important issues prompting the agency to take him into their custody during which another round of examination might take place.
