New Delhi: The International Hockey Federation (FIH) on Friday shortlisted India skipper Sardar Singh for its 2012 'Player of the Year' award, alongside Australia captain Jamie Dwyer, Germany's Moritz Furste and Tobias Hauke and Netherland's Robert van der Horst.
Sardar, who has been part of the World XI as a central midfielder for the last two years, was elevated as captain of the team before India's tour of Australia where they played the Lanco Super 9s Series and are currently involved in the Champions Trophy.
The Indian skipper has been instrumental in India's successful return to the Champions Trophy having made it to the semi-finals, which is significant considering they finished last at the London Olympics and are making a combeack to the Champions Trophy after a gap of six years as a wild card entry.
FIH will announce the name of the winner on Saturday at the Champions Trophy in Melbourne. Also for the first time, hockey's apex body has included players under the age of 21 for its 'Young Player of the Year' award. The previous cut-off age was 23.
The women's 'Player of the Year' and 'Young Player of the Year' and the 'Coach of the Year' for both men and women will be announced in early 2013.
