New Delhi: Taking note of the rising air pollution levels due to trucks and heavy vehicles in the national capital, the Supreme Court issued notices to the Centre and Delhi government, asking why an environment charge of Rs 600 and 1200 should not be imposed on the vehicles.
This charge will be levied over and above the existing octroi and tolls, the court observed.
Earlier, the National Green Tribunal (NGT) had also recommended several measures against vehicles emitting poisonous smoke. NGT had said that all diesel vehicles which are more than 10 years old will not be permitted to ply in national capital.
Noting that diesel is a prime source of air pollution in Delhi, the Tribunal said the situation is so alarming that people have been even advised to leave Delhi due to adverse effects on health.
