New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Friday said it will not decide jail term for absconding liquor baron Vijay Mallya until the Central government brings him to the court.
A bench led by Justice Adarsh K Goel felt constrained to adjourn the contempt case against Mallya indefinitely over the government's failure to "secure his presence".
Attorney General K K Venugopal, referring to the government's status report, enumerated steps being taken by the Centre to bring back Mallya.
But the bench responded that it was not interested in monitoring these steps and that all it wanted was the government to produce him before the apex court.
"You have to produce him...we are not going to monitor your steps. We will take up this case only after you produce him," the bench told the AG.
The court then deferred the case, saying it would be listed once the government informs it about securing Mallya's presence.
The founder-owner of Kingfisher Airlines was held guilty of contempt on May 9 for concealing his assets and not complying with the court orders.
It had then asked the government to "secure and ensure his presence" on July 10 to enable the bench to deliver prison term. Under contempt charge, Mallya faces maximum six months in jail.
However, on July 10 Nobody appeared for the government and the bench then sought the presence of Solicitor General. On Friday, the AG appeared on behalf of the government.
