ALUVA: The Kerala State Seed Farm in Thuruth, which produces seeds of paddy, spices and vegetable for farmers can be developed into a major hub for agriculture and tourism, and a source of revenue to the exchequer if the proposal for multilevel schemes is introduced. The Agriculture School, Krishi Paadasala, was reportedly launched by the erstwhile King of Travancore-Cochin in the 5-hectare land surrounded by Periyar in Thuruth. This was later converted into the State Seed Farm. The Farm is in a dilapidated condition as the government and other agencies have failed to improve the infrastructure and other facilities. The functioning of the farm is now directly under the control of Ernakulam District Panchayat. A project which was proposed for the improvement of the farm and to attract farmers and tourists is still entangled in the files. The agriculture teaching centre can be reintroduced here to educate students and farmers on the modern techniques of farming. Field level training in vermi composting, proper use of pesticides, operation of agriculture implements, lessons on pest control, life-cycle of pests and storage techniques can be imparted more conveniently in the farm, sources said.There is wider scope for promoting farm tourism. As the area is surrounded by the Periyar, boating will be an attractive scheme to be implemented here. Kerala was chosen as one of the six states for implementing organic farming in the country. The farm has been found to be ideal for launching an organic agriculture production centre. Organic farming can be introduced for paddy cultivation, coconut, tender coconut, coconut oil, milk, spices, vegetables and fruits. An organic seed farm would be a much sought after project. The marketing of organic agriculture produce would fetch huge foreign exchange to the state.
