Mumbai: The demand for Belgaum in the ongoing Maharashtra-Karnataka border crises gained further momentum as the Shiv Sena on Tuesday approached Governor S M Krishna to intervene in the matter.
A party delegation of MLAs across the state led by Sena Executive President, Uddhav Thackeray are pinning their hopes on the former Karnataka Chief Minister to act as mediator and put forward the case to the state government.
The Sainiks have said that they will persist and have even threatened drastic measures if the issue isn't resolved soon enough.
"If the issue goes out of hand then we have been told to take action. The matter is in court and people can express their opinion, so why did they attack?" Uddhav Thackeray said.
The Karnataka government has said that the Election Commission should derecognise the Shiv Sena in view of the anti-Kannadiga remarks made by Sena supremo Bal Thackeray.
Shiv Sena supremo Balasaheb Thackeray had reportedly said that his Sainiks would would attack Kannadigas residing in Maharashtra if any harm was done to Marathi-speaking people in Karnataka.
On October 27, the Belgaum Municipal Corporation passed a resolution recommending the merger of Belgaum, Khanapur and Nipani taluks of Belgaum district, where Marathi-speaking people are dominant, with Maharashtra.
This sparked violent protests by the Maharashtra Ekikaran Samiti, a regional political party and Shiv Sena activists. Belgaum mayor Kiran More was beaten up and abused by members of the Kannada Hitarakshana Vedike, a pro-Kannadiga body.
Adding fuel to fire was the Karnataka CM Dharam Singh?s decision to dissolve the Belgaum municipal body.
