KANCHEEPURAM: By setting herself on fire, leaving a suicide note saying, “I am ending my life with the belief that my sacrifice would save the lives of Perarivalan, Murugan and Santhan,” 21-year-old Senkodi has ignited a passion among the people to fight for abolition of death penalty. The town’s walls were awash with posters condoling the death of Senkodi and urging the people of the town to carry forward the fight against death penalty.Around 50 students of Pachaiyappa’s Higher Secondary school had gathered to pay respect to Senkodi as her body was taken around the town in a procession. Some of them said: “Only after this sister sacrificed her life, our parents and elders at home have started talking against death penalty.” As the procession stopped in front of the Tahsildar office in Kancheepuram, where Senkodi had set herself ablaze on Sunday, political leaders and Aruputhamammal, the mother of Perarivalan, one of the men sentenced to death, paid their respects by lighting candles.Senkodi’s foster mother Magesh, a member of Kacheepuram Makkal Mandram, was by the side of the body in the procession, raising slogans against death penalty. A member of the socio-cultural NGO said that Senkodi was an expert ‘Parai’ drummer and was part of the drama troupe.
