KARIMNAGAR: In a novel way of protecting the company’s assets, the security wing at Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL) has pressed into service 35 German Shepherd guard dogs at its major operation areas.SCCL operates coal mines in four districts of the state and has stationed the dogs at Kothagudem, Manugur and Illandu of Khammam district, Bhoopalapalli of Warangal district, Srirampur of Adilabad district and Godavarikhani (Ramagudam area) of Karimnagar district on a pilot basis. The company has also appointed around 50 care-takers for the German-shepherds which are often also used by the police department as sniffer and guard dogs. Apart from huge expensive machinery used in the excavation of coal, most coal mines also have piles of valuable scrap lying around. The company generally calls in tenders to sell off these scrap once every year. But in the meantime, they present an opportunity for thieves. Many incidents of theft have been reported even after the company hired private security guards. But, thieves stealthily attacked them and made away with the scrap. Guard dogs have been found to be more useful, said Laxminarayana, a security officer. The trained dogs bark at any un-identified people, he added.
