CHENNAI: Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa met with National Security Advisor Shiva Sankara Menon in the city on Thursday and discussed the issue of the Sri Lankan Navy's attacks on Tamil Nadu fishermen and the resettlement of internally displaced Lankan Tamils. Menon was in Chennai on his way to Sri Lanka.
The meeting between Jayalalithaa and Menon lasted for an hour at her Poes Garden residence. Chief Secretary Debendranath Sarangi was also present during the talks. Menon assured the CM that he would take up these issues with the Lankan authorities on Friday and would speak to her before returning to New Delhi.During the meeting, the CM expressed serious concerns over the Sri Lankan Navy's continued attacks on Tamil Nadu's fishermen and said the promises made by Lanka had not been kept. Tamil Nadu's fishermen should be allowed fish around Katchatheevu and their traditional rights over the islet should be restored, she said.

Pointing out that there have been differing reports on the number of displaced Lankan Tamils, including figures on those in refugee camps or resettled in their native places, Jayalalithaa said correct details should be collected.

Menon and Foreign Secretary Nirupama Rao will be travelling from Chennai to Colombo on Friday morning. The two top Indian officials' visit to Sri Lanka assumes significance in the wake two key resolutions adopted by the Tamil Nadu State Assembly over the past two days - one demanding economic sanctions be imposed on Sri Lanka and the other on redeeming the Katchatheevu islet from the island nation.
