New Delhi: Former Delhi law minister Somnath Bharti perhaps did not see this coming. Shortly after he made a controversial remark saying "beautiful women" would feel safer if the Delhi Police was brought under AAP control, his estranged wife lashed out at him asking him what about "average looking women like us".
"I put a lot of love and effort into our marriage. But apparently he cares only for beautiful women. His statement also proved that. Probably that is why he committed such atrocities on me. I am an average looking woman. Who will look after average women like us? We have no place to go," she said.
Bharti had made the remark while speaking on women's safety in the Delhi Assembly. However, the comment did not go down well with the Opposition which asked Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal to restrain the leader from making such careless remarks.
Bharti, however, defended himself saying it was "no big deal".
"When we were kids, we were told that if beautiful women could roam around from Kashmir to Kanyakumari, then only could we call India safe. I only said that there should be a secure environment. It's a proverb I used. I don't think it's a big deal," he said.
