CHENNAI: A new dairy would be set up in Ambattur here by the Tamil Nadu Cooperative Milk Producers Federation Limited (TCMPF), the makers of Aavin, to meet the growing demand for milk products.Moving the demand for grant for milk and dairy development, Minister V Moorthy said the capacity of the Ambattur dairy was inadequate to meet the growing demand of milk products in Chennai.The dairy was producing kova, ice cream, lassi, curd, buttermilk, paneer, gulab jamoon and mysorepa. Hence, a new ‘product dairy’ would be established in the vacant land adjacent to the existing facility in an area of 2.50 acre with a total outlay of `12 crore.“The work has been initiated with federation funds. TCMPF is also seeking assistance from NABARD, besides others,” he said.To usher in the second wh-ite revolution, strategies had been evolved, he said. Str-engthening grass root level infrastructure by forming 6,000 dairy units in a phased manner was among them. Each year, 1,500 dairy units would be formed by engaging NGOs.Also, this year, 10,000 mi-lch cows would be procured with funding assistance from banks, which would be given to milk producers. The effort would strengthen the goal of a second white revolution. In 20-12-13, it was proposed to increase milk production to 28 lakh litres per day at the primary level by forming new milk producers’ cooperative societies and bringing more producers to the cooperative fold by ensuring animal health care and providing cattle feed.
