BHUBANESWAR: The State Government has directed all urban local bodies (ULBs) to stop manual cleaning of septic tanks by scavengers. Sources said Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has issued directive in this regard asking the collectors to stop this practice forthwith and asked them to engage mechanised cesspools instead of manual scavengers. Naveen called for action taken reports by December-end from all the collectors in this regard. The Chief Minister asked the collectors to take up monthly review and sort out local problems by associating ULBs. The collectors have to coordinate the land alienation process required for solid waste management and ensure removal of encroachments for speedy implementation of infrastructure projects, he said. Besides, Naveen asked the collectors to give priority to rehabilitation of slum-dwellers by allotting suitable land in the urban areas. District urban development agencies need to be activated to monitor self and wage employment schemes in ULBs, he said.
