CHENNAI: Several teachers and students of Sir MCT Muthiah Chettiar Higher Secondary School at Flowers Road, Purasawalkam, on Monday, intensified their protest against the school management, opposing its alleged move to use the school premises for a commercial venture. The government-aided school’s senior management officials had been planning to convert two of the three buildings on the school campus for business purposes, alleged the school teachers, who started a sit-in-protest on the school premises on September 5. “Ever since the start of this academic year, the school management has been trying to cordon off portions of the school, including the school playground, for some new commercial venture. Those teachers who protested the move were issued memos condemning their behaviour,” explained the school’s Tamil teacher Govindarajan. This has largely affected the education of students, including students of Class 12, who were not allowed to use their rooms, he said, explaining that the 53 teachers and 2,000 students of the school opposed the management’s actions. The school correspondent, Tarun Ghai, against whom these allegations were levelled, remained unavailable for comment. Chief Education Officer Nagarajan Murugesan told ‘Express’ that talks were held with the school management on the issue on Monday. “An inquiry was conducted over the impasse in the school, and the issues have been sorted out. The school will function normally from tomorrow,” he said, ruling out that the school had plans for a business venture on the school premises.
