BANGALORE: On a mission to save the world from human threat, the students of Seshadripuram Academy of Business Studies have formed the Eco-Club, a forum of like minded students who are interested in protecting the environment. Recently, the club in association with Karnataka Renewable Energy Development Limited (KREDL) organised a rally called ‘Eco- Future’, an initiative by the students to spread awareness about energy conservation.Over 500 students from various colleges participated in the rally. The students walked around the city with banners and shouting slogans about solar energy for several hours. In a span of a day, the students reached out to over thousand people and tried to make them understand the mistakes made in everyday life that is adverse to nature. “Students and teachers marched together from the College to Kengeri Satellite Town, with solutions for shortage of energy. They educated the public about the purpose of the rally and showed them the pros and cons of solar energy, which can be adapted to our daily lives. They also conveyed the message of energy consumption and its effects on the environment,” said Chitra C N, chief co-ordinator of the Eco-club, Sheshadripuram. The students created small groups and reached out to people in different languages to make the rally effective. They visited nearby sites and conducted discussions on the subject of energy consumption. They cleared doubts raised by the public regarding solar energy. The rally was flagged off on January 6 by Dinesh Kumar Project Engineer of KREDL along with A R Srinivasaiah. joint secretary of Seshadripuram Educational Trust and K L H Raya, CEO of Deepa Solar Lighting System.The club was set-up in February 2011 and has conducted over 15 programmes till date at intercollegiate levels. Chitra said, “We have encouraged our students to think about the future of our environment. We have conducted talks and competitions on this subject among various colleges to bring up a change in attitude towards the environment amongst the youth. We have competitions such as quiz, theater and writing events.”
