The primary school at Kandhbahal village under Turekela block in the district has the luxury of having three teachers for 35 students of three classes.

The reason: It is barely 7 km from Kantabanji town and hence a preferred destination among teachers.

Unfortunately the good things end here. The school, being run from a dingy single room handed out by a good Samaritan for the last two years, has failed to draw the attention of the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) authorities. The tiled house, barely 10 X 7 feet, is dilapidated. There is no ventilation in the room even as the students study under the light of a single bulb. Huddled into the small room with little breathing space, the students have a tough time which worsens during monsoon when rainwater seeps through walls.

This is not all. The students have to make do without teaching materials supposed to be provided by SSA. Ironically, the Cluster Resource Centre Co-ordinator Trilochan Majhi is in-charge of the school.

District Project Co-ordinator Kabindra Kumar Sahu said money had already been sanctioned and work on the school building would start on a plot of land donated by a villager soon.
