BANGALORE: The students who have been living in congested rooms sharing their accommodation that was meant for three or four students with more than six in the government run post-metric hostels for backward castes from the past four months, can heave a sigh of relief. The Social Welfare Department has now directed concerned officials to rent houses and rooms to accommodate some of the students. The department principal secretary E Venkataiah said, “As there was an unprecedented demand for admission in these hostels, we had instructed the officials to accomodate as many students as possible to help them continue their studies. The hostels have become over crowded now,” he added. “Though we are able to provide them with food and other necessities including books, the hostels have become congested. Therefore, we have directed the officials to rent houses and rooms near these hostels to accommodate some of the students,” he said. Venkataiah mentioned that, the government has instructed the DCs in each district to release required funds for renting the houses on priority basis. The students who would be accommodated in the rented buildings will have to come to the hostels to eat food and for other purposes and extra wardens would be appointed to monitor these students whenever necessary. According to sources, over 50,000 students were admitted in 430 hostels for the backward castes all over the state, though these hostels had infrastructure to accommodate 40,000 students only. Therefore, the students in some of the over crowded hostels, had written to the social welfare minister requesting him to provide better facilities. It may be noted that many seats are vacant in the hostels that are being run by the government for schedule castes and schedule tribes.
