Swine flu virus mutated, no reason to panic, say experts

Mumbai: A recent report by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology claims that the swine flu virus has been mutated to take on a more infectious strain. However health experts have said that there is no reason to panic.

The report claims that virus has mutated and has taken on a more deadly and infectious strain which has rapidly spread across 26 states in the country.

Haffkine Institute former director Dr S Sapatnekar said, "This report is essentially for experts. We need not press the panic button. After the infection occurs, the body will react in a way more and more RBC might clog the capillaries and he complication might be more."

This MIT study done by two Indo-Americans contradicts the research findings of the National Institute of Virology, Pune, which in February said that the current strain of swine flu has not changed from the 2009 version but independent experts do support the government assessment of the situtaion.

However, the Delhi Health Minister seems more serious about the risks due to the flu virus. "Government is equipped to handle the situation, people in Delhi are immune to virus unlike in other parts of the country," the minister said.

There is no cause for worry because the medication Tamiflu remains effective. So the key is to get medical aid immediately in case of flu like symptoms.
