Tami Nadu And Kerala Governments Collaborate For Assessing Nilgiri Tahr And Its Division
The initiative is taken by the Tamil Nadu Forest Department in collaboration with the Kerala Forest Department, Wildlife Institute of India, World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

The first comprehensive synchronised three-day survey for Nilgiri Tahr kickstarted on April 29. The Tamil Nadu Forest Department takes the initiative in collaboration with the Kerala Forest Department, Wildlife Institute of India, World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Nilgiri Tahr is the State animal of Tamil Nadu. Over 700 field staff were employed in the three-day survey, from April 29 to May 1.

Supriya Sahu, Additional Chief Secretary, Environment, Climate Change and Forest, posted on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to announce the start of the project. According to the post, the survey was conducted in The Grass Hills National Park and Mukurthi National Park of Tamil Nadu share along with Eravikulam National Park & Silent Valley National Park of Kerala. Explaining the process of the survey the government official stated that the Nilgiri Tahr habitat of Tamil Nadu was divided into 13 forest divisions, 100 forest beats and 140 blocks to easily conduct the synchronised survey.

IAS Supriya Sahu explained the importance of the initiative. She wrote in the post “The results of Synchronized survey and the approximate numbers of Nilgiri Tahr in Western Ghats, in Tamil Nadu will provide crucial and critical baseline data for conservation planning and management of Nilgiri Tahr population.”

Following the conclusion of the second day, IAS Supriya Sahu wrote in her another post “Update on Day 2 of the synchronized survey for Nilgiri Tahr population estimation in Tamil Nadu. The teams have recorded 24 Tahrs in KMTR tiger reserve while in SMTR tiger reserve 42 individuals have been recorded. Direct and indirect sightings were made at several other places. Data is being compiled.”

The survey concluded on May 1 is expected to bring more light on the numbers of Nilgiri Tahr in their historical habitat. According to a report by The Hindu, this project aims to develop a better understanding of the population, distribution and ecology of the Nilgiri Tahr. The budget of the whole project stands at around Rs 25 lakhs, the report stated.
