KOTTAYAM: Extending their support to the cause of a new dam at Mullaperiyar, people from Tamil Nadu living here observed a fast and said that Tamils living in Kerala and Tamil Nadu would be the worst hit if the dam broke.All Kerala Tamizh Federation president P M Abubacker said that about 10 lakh Tamils living in Kerala would be killed if anything happened to the dam. Once the dam is gone, Tamils in five districts of Tamil Nadu would face severe water shortage. He said the common people in Tamil Nadu were not aware of this fact.Abubacker appealed to the political parties not to create a wedge between the people of the two states who were like members of the same family. He appealed to Tamils and the Tamil Nadu Government to ensure the safety of Malayalis living near the dam. He hailed Malayalis for treating them with honour and affection and said Tamils in Kerala were assafe as they were in Tamil Nadu. Rajamani, coordinator of the function which was organised by the Tamil Kalai Valarchi Manram, Kottayam, said that a memorandum would be sent to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa demanding a new dam at Mullaperiyar. He said that the outfit would wait for about two weeks and take a decision on taking out a march to Mullaperiyar and organising a fast at Chappathu. If needed they would observe a fast outside Jayalalithaa’s house. Earlier, Revenue Minister Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan praised the association for extending its support for a new dam. The minister said that it had become a necessity to build a new dam at Mullaperiyar. Kottayam municipal chairman Sunny Kalloor addressed those who took part in the day-long fast.
