The dispute between the Corporation and Thrikkakara municipality over the disposal of waste materials has been settled finally and both the local bodies will soon ink a pact in this regard.
As per the agreement, the waste materials from the municipality will be treated at the Brahmapuram waste treatment plant of the Corporation. With the Corporation Council giving its nod for the agreement, the civic administrators are planning to sign the agreement by this month end. “The waste from Thrikkakara will be processed at the Brahmapuram plant from September 1,” said an official with the Corporation.
The Corporation is paying Rs 550 per tonne to a private agency for processing the waste transported to Brahmapuram. As per the agreement, the municipal authorities will also pay the same amount to the agency for waste treatment.
Earlier, the grave issue of waste management had resulted in an open fight between the local body and the Corporation. The municipal authorities asked the permission of the Corporation to treat the waste at Brahmapuram, which the Corporation denied citing that the plant at Brahmapuram was totally defunct at that time and the Corporation was not in a position to allow neighbouring municipalities to dump their waste on the plant premises. Protesting against the Corporation’s move, the municipal councillors of Thrikkakara blocked the trucks carrying waste from the Corporation to Brahmapuram.
The major demand put forth by the councillors was the permission to dispose waste generated in the municipality at the Brahmapuram plant . They also asked the Corporation to use covered trucks to transport waste. Following the incident, Mayor Tony Chammany gave assurance to the councillors that he will consider their demands.
The state government has already initiated the proceedings to set up a new plant at Brahmapuram. The new plant will have more capacity and the Corporation can think of treating the waste generated from other neighbouring municipalities too.
