Theft-accused constable suggests reforms to DGP

A day after he staged a five-hour long kidnap drama by taking captive a superintendent of police (SP) and allegedly threatening to kill him, suspended head constable KN Giri Prasad Sarma on Thursday met in-charge DGP V Dinesh Reddy, where he suggested that a police TV channel must be launched in order to fight corruption in the department.

“I suggested to the DGP to bring out some powerful reforms in the Police Transport Organisation (PTO) and to prevent corruption in issues like filling up of vacant driver posts. A police TV channel will be helpful,” Sarma said.

Meanwhile, the constable, who was let off after the kidnap drama, was slapped with cases under IPC sections (kidnap), 189 (threat to public servant) and 506 (criminal intimidation) , leading to questions why he was let go in the first place.

However, he was not arrested. In fact, Sarma admitted that it was very childish of him to have kidnapped the SP.

“The DGP excused my act promising that he will consider revoking my suspension. I will be given posting in the DGP office shortly,” Sarma said.

Sources also said the tiff between the two officers started when Sarma was working as a mechanic in the PTO and had introduced a managing director of a manufacturing unit to the higher officials for sale of some material.

“Since then, Sarma was demanding a commission,” sources said.

But when he refused the commission, Sarma wrote about 30 letters to the IG, PTO seeking action against some officials, which reportedly included Lakshminarayana, alleging corruption.

Later, Sarma was suspended for allegedly stealing spare parts and fuel from police vehicles. Meanwhile, the DGP has set up an inquiry into the incident. DGP (Law and Order) S A Huda said the AIG (administration) has been entrusted with the inquiry and will submit a report soon.
