The Studebaker Champion was a car manufactured by the Studebaker Corporation of South Bend, Indiana, from 1939 until 1958.

Vintage cars are always a marvel to look at, particularly for automobile enthusiasts. Many vintage cars are put up for display at museums for the common man to see but a particular car museum in the city of Mysuru, Karnataka has a car stationed that was used by a revered yesteryear personality.

The Payana Car Museum houses the Studebaker Champion, which was used by renowned physicist and Nobel laureate Sir CV Raman. Earlier this month, the Payana Vintage Car Museum, located on the outskirts of Mysuru, was unveiled to the public. This creatively crafted museum exhibits a variety of automobiles gathered over the past fifty years. Positioned along the Bengaluru-Mysuru highway, the museum boasts an exterior designed to resemble the outline of a car tyre. One of the many collected vehicles included the car that was a favourite of Sir CV Raman.

The Studebaker Champion was a car manufactured by the Studebaker Corporation of South Bend, Indiana, from 1939 until 1958. Initially, it belonged to the full-size car category for its first three generations, later transitioning to a mid-size designation for its fourth and fifth generations. It was positioned as the smaller counterpart to the Commander model. Debuting in 1939, the Champion adhered to contemporary design trends, featuring a partially integrated grille and headlights. The deluxe variants boasted additional features like armrests and dual wipers.

Renowned industrial designer Raymond Loewy, who was contracted by Studebaker for their automobile designs, crafted the Champion’s ponton styling. During World War II, the car gained significant value due to its exceptional efficiency, particularly during the period of gas rationing in the United States.

Additionally, from 1943 to 1945, the Champion’s engine powered the Studebaker M29 Weasel personnel and cargo carrier, which utilized four sets of the Champion’s leaf springs arranged transversely for its bogie suspension. Ultimately, the Champion model was phased out in 1958 to make way for the introduction of the 1959 Studebaker Lark. The one on display in the Payana car museum is blue.
