Berhampore: Two medical attendants and a baby were killed while few others sustained injuries when a fire broke out in Murshidabad Medical College and Hospital on Saturday.

Panic prevailed in the hospital as people ran helter-skelter leading to a near stampede.

The fire broke out in the first floor of the hospital and the source of the fire is said to be a short circuit in an AC duct.

"A fire broke out in the hospital. Three causalities were reported. Fire has been brought under control. There is no need for panic", Chief Medical Officer of Health (CMOH) S Saha said.

Many babies who were on the second floor of the hospital fell ill due to the smoke caused by the fire.

Soon after the fire broke out, patients were seen coming out of the hospital while some infants were taken out of the hospital ward.

Some Parents and relatives climbed up trees adjacent to the hospital in a desperate attempt to rescue their babies.

Media reports suggest that the babies had to be laid in the open after they were rescued.
