THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: It was a shocking scene that awaited the policemen attached with the Fort Police Station when they broke into the house of Rukmini Ammal who was staying in a flat near Fort Hospital. The police had arrived at the place on Tuesday evening to investigate a complaint that Rukmini Ammal had attacked a neighbour with a small knife. Seeing the police officers, the 60-year-old woman fled to her room and locked it from the inside. The officers who sneaked in had a shock when they almost stumbled on the three-day-old dead body of 35-year-old Pushpa, daughter of Rukmini, which was lying on the bed with flies hovering over it. The incident has shocked the city people as the very neighbours of the family could not find out what was happening in their vicinity. The police version speaks the story of a 60-year-old mother and her daughter who had gone insane after the death of her husband, 10 years ago. Saju Anthony, SI of Fort station who led the first police team to the spot said that the people residing nearby almost never saw Pushpa, except when she appeared near the windows and popped up her head through the grills. ”It is said that Pushpa was married but divorced days after she tied the nuptial knot. Like her mother, she too suffered from mental illness,” he said. The neighbours still can’t seem to comprehend what happened at the flat. Police also said that since her husband’s death, Rukmini never let her daughter out of the house and even severed her family relations. Since then it was a life with almost no parallels. The police officers who conducted the inquest said that they did not find any wound on the corpse and felt that the death might have resulted from starvation. The autopsy was done at the Medical College Hospital here. Since the relatives of the family refused to come forward to accept the body, it is being stored at the mortuary. Meanwhile Rukmini was shifted to the Oolampara Mental Hospital here.
