Chennai: The Tamil State Film awards function is stuck in a time warp. While most other states are giving away awards for 2005, the Tamil Nadu Film Awards was finishing the backlog for 2003 and 2004.
But awards are awards, and who cares as long as one wins them? So the biggest smiles came from the cast of Bala's Pithamagan, for which both Vikram and Layla won Best Actor and Actress respectively.
Layla is relatively new to the film industry and this award was her first big win.
A 2003 release Pithamagan is the story of a man who grows up in complete isolation and how his life changes after a finding a true friend.
"I was glad to be offered a role where I didn’t have a single dialogue. And director Bala let me get completely into character and I got away with a lot of histrionics," actor Vikram said.
Speaking of histrionics, there was quite a bit of that in his recent film, Anniyan too.
"Yes, Lots of hairstyles. I had 23 hairstyles, while Sada just had 10. It was great fun," Vikram added.
The best film of 2003 was Era Nilam, by veteran director Bharathiraja. For 2004, Cheran's low-key hit Autograph won Best Film, while Jyothika picked up the Best Actress award for Perazhagan.
Harris Jayaraj is 2003's Best Music Director for his unconventional songs in Kaakha Kaakha and Srikanth Deva won the same award for M Kumaran for 2004.
Special awards named after former Tamil Nadu chief minister C N Annadurai has been given to popular playback singers T M Sounderarajan and P Susheela.
In all, 123 people (from various artistic fields) were facilitated at the award ceremony. The awards were presented by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, J Jayalalitha at a gala event in Chennai on February 23.
So, the awards might have come late, and the show might have been peppered with political speeches, but when it's a trophy to add to one’s shelf, no one is complaining.
