TN: Mom tries to throw newborn girl out of train
Hours after she was born, the infant's mother packed her in a bag and tried to throw her out of the moving train.

Chennai: Most parents welcome their newborns with affection and much joy. However, this baby girl was not. Hours after she was born, the infant’s mother packed her in a polythene bag and tried to throw her out of a moving train. But the baby was saved. Commuters, who were alerted by the infant’s wails, thwarted the mother’s attempt to hurl the bag out of a moving train on Wednesday. The woman, identified as Chitra, was later taken to a human rights organisation in the city.

Separated from her husband for over a decade, Chitra (36) gave birth to the baby girl in her house at Ulundurpet in Villupuram around 10.00 pm on Tuesday. “Fearing my parents, I ran away. I moved out to give my baby to somebody for her better future,” Chitra said. On reaching Chengalpet, she stuffed her baby in a polythene bag and boarded another train for Chennai. After the train chugged out of Singaperumalkoil, Chitra tried to throw the bag with the baby around 8.30 am.

Lakshmi Raghuram, a medical organiser with a human rights organisation, to whom the baby was handed over said her firm would facilitate the infant’s adoption and that she has written a letter to the police.
