“This year, Chota Bheem and Angry Birds rakhis were major hits,” said 19-year-old Raghuvir Patel, a native of Jodhpur, who was in the city to help his uncle with his fancy store business.

“Children were attracted to these rakhis.  We also have Ben 10, Winnie the Pooh and Noddy rakhis that were very popular last year,” he noted.

More than 15 shops in Gandhi Bazar sold over 500 different types of rakhis.

D V Patel, who owns a fancy store in Gandhi Bazaar,  said that the trend of celebrating Raksha Bandhan has picked up in the city over the past five years.

“We find many college girls buying several rakhis at once,” he observed. “This is the first time in many years that Raksha Bandhan has come before Friendship Day. We sold nearly 3,000 rakhis on the eve of Raksha Bandhan,” he added.

They plan to sell rakhis till Janmashtami as many customers use rakhis to decorate Krishna idols.

Online rakhis

The trend of sending online rakhis or eRakhis is rapidly picking up. Pooja Narang, a real estate professional in Dubai, who used to post rakhi for her brother in Bangalore, said, “Only this year, I tried the eRakhi and my brother loved the idea.”
