Too much on Leander's plate to be the captain: Bhupathi
Mahesh Bhupathi told CNN-IBN said that AITA should ask Leander Paes to step down as the captain.

New Delhi: Mahesh Bhupathi spoke to CNN-IBN on Thursday and said he was keen on finding a solution to the whole issue of the Indian Davis Cup team unwilling to play under the captaincy of Leander Paes. Mahesh also admitted there are serious apprehensions about playing under Paes.

On the controversy

"It was an extreme step but it was not supposed to be a publicly extreme step. It was a confidential e-mail to the AITA. It leaked out of the office of the AITA and into the hands of the media. And that has created a media frenzy which nobody is happy about. "

On Leander Paes

"There are issues and the best way out is to have a non-playing captain. Leander definitely has got good leadership qualities. He was the leader when we played doubles together and he led the team. But there is too much on his plate right now with the media outburst and all and I think pressure leads to doing silly things."

What next

"My take on it is precious and it is the worst decision AITA can take. When we were playing doubles together 6-7 years ago, Leander wanted a change in captaincy with Jaideep Mukherjee. And he got it in the next tie itself. So if the today the number one and number two players are asking for a change in captain, then one, the AITA has to be one consistent with their decisions and two if they decide with Leander staying as the captain then indirectly the AITA is telling the players that we really don't care about you or your thoughts."

On pairing up with Paes for the Beijing Olympics

"The Beijing Olympics is still a month away and knowing me and Leander there are still a few good controversies between now and Beijing."
