CHENNAI: A day after Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa inaugurated the Greater Chennai Police Commissionerate, city police commissioner J K Tripathy on Thursday had a meeting with officials to discuss the modalities of policing.“We will be providing better policing for the people under the new system,” said J K Tripathy, who is busy with work on the newly-formed Commissionerate. Around 12 complaints from the suburban areas were received on Thursday at the Commissionerate, while 12 people from Avadi filed a complaint of land-grabbing with the city police commissionerate. “People need not worry about district jurisdictions, they can file their complaints with the deputy commissioner of police in their locality,” assured a senior po lice officer, adding that the Commissioner was aiming at solving the local problems at the jurisdiction level. “He had already instructed officers in the rank of deputy commissioners and below to meet the people at their doorstep during the evening hours to listen to their problems. Community police will take a strong shape in the city,” said the senior officer.Explaining the administrative aspects of the Greater Chennai Commissionerate, the officer said that the mechanism had been restructured as follows: South Zone would cover T Nagar, Adyar and St Thomas Mount police districts, West Zone would comprise Ambattur, Anna Nagar and Pulianthope police districts and East Zone would comprise Mylapore, Kilpauk and Triplicane police districts.The existing three Joint Commissioners would be given charge of North, West and East Zones. New appointment would be made for South zone in next few days, added the senior officer.The new system will have the following posts - Joint Commissioner of Police (headquarters), Joint Commissioner of Police (intelligence), Joint Commissioner of Police (Central Crime Branch), Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic), Deputy Commissioner of Police (Headquarters), Deputy Commissioner of Police (Armed Reserved) and Deputy Commissioner of Police (Control Room).
