The summer tourism boat service started in Piravom panchayat is drawing crowds. More than 3,000 persons, including children, took boat rides which commenced on an experimental basis about 20 days ago. The panchayat earned a revenue of more than Rs 22,000 from it.The service was organised on the Muvattupuzha river. The panchayat authorities called tender and arranged a 45-seat boat for one month for Rs 1.28 lakh. The panchayat committee had sanctioned Rs 1 lakh for the tourism boat service in its budget in March 2011, said president Sabu K Jacob. The boat ride begins from the temporary jetty constructed in front of the panchayat office. The ride of one-hour duration touches the sand bed of the Pazhoor temple and returns to Kalamboor Kave temple. The boat fare is Rs 20 for adults and Rs 5 for children. As the experiment is a success the panchayat is planning to establish a permanent boat service on the river, said the president. “The panchayat had submitted a project to the district panchayat for constructing a permanent boat jetty and for buying a house boat”, Sabu said. “The Piravom panchayat and Muvattupuzha river have immense tourism potential but it is yet to be tapped. The panchayat also decided to submit a proposal to the District Tourism Promotion Council (DTPC) to construct a hanging bridge connecting the Pazhoor and Kakkad ghats,” he said. “If a bridge is constructed it will become useful to the residents of Kakkad and will also be a tourist attraction”, Sabu said.
