KOCHI: June 6 will be the last chance for anyone alive now to witness one of the rarest astronomical phenomena, when the planet Venus will be seen crossing the face of the sun, appearing in silhouette as a tiny black spot. The celestial phenomenon, known as Transit of Venus, will next be seen next only after 125 years.Transits of Venus occur in pairs that are eight years apart, but the dual event rarely happens more than once in a century. The first segment of the current pair occurred in 2004, and after June 6, the next pair will not arrive until 2117.The Breakthrough Science Society is organising a oneday workshop on May 12 at Ernakulam SND Samajam English Medium School, wherein the historicallysignificant celestial phenomenon will be discussed in detail.Retired ISRO scientist C Ramachandran will inaugurate the workshop. The transit of Earth’s sister planet has a crucial role to play in the progress of scientific understanding of various astronomical phenomena. The workshop is being held to promote this understanding among the public, said Francis Kalathungal, Coordinator of Breakthrough Science Society, in a press statement.Caution needs to be exercised while witnessing the Venus Transit.Viewing the phenomenon with naked eye can prove harmful. The phenomenon must be viewed only through specially-prepared filters.Preparation of the filters will also be taught during the workshop. Those interested in participating may contact on phone 944048303, 9497367989.
