NABARANGPUR: The five-day Mondei-2011 - the annual cultural extravaganza that showcases Nabarangpur’s rich cultural heritage - began on a colourful note on Tuesday.The carnival began from Sri Ram temple and passed through the Mahatma Gandhi Marg to the main venue where a number of traditional folk dances were performed by various troupes which came from across the district.  The carnival stopped for a while at Bhandargharani temple, the presiding deity of the town, where puja was performed for successful completion of the festival.Culture Minister Prafulla Samal, IT Minister Ramesh Majhi, legislators Bhujbal Majhi, Manohar Randhari, Film Development Corporation Chairperson Muna Khan, District Collector Sivabrata Dash and municipal chairperson Prahallad Tripathy participated in the carnival.Besides the traditional folk dance troupes, hundreds of townsfolk took part in the parade. The procession saw tribals with ‘lathis’ worshipped by them, a number of tribal musical parties and various tribal fancy shows performed along the way. The Mondei carnival reached Mondei Rangamanch in the evening. Recalling the history of the festival, Samal said the festival provides local artistes an opportunity to interact with their counterparts from other states. A five-day industrial exhibition, Pallishree Mela and national-level buyer-seller meet are also being organised.
