Failed bid to blackmail ministerThe first incident on Tuesday occurred when the Museum Police nabbed two persons who tried to blackmail a state Minister. The accused were identified as Sajeesh Krishna and Eby Paul of Palakkad. The police said that the accused, along with two others, Satheesh Krishna and Raveendran, had visited Minister for Power Aryadan Mohammed posing themselves as representatives of a foreign company named Avaco Electricals and held talks on conducting business of the company’s electrical equipment with the state government.They recorded the video of the talks with the Minister using a miniature camera hidden inside a wrist watch worn by one of them. Later, they edited the video and superimposed audio, in which they used a mimicked sound of the Minister bargaining for commission for the business. They then produced a video CD with the edited visuals and demanded Rs 25 lakh from the Minister, if he did not want the CD to be released in public.However, the police tricked the fraudsters into their trap and nabbed them based on a tip-off received by the Director General of Police. They were produced before the court and remanded in judicial custody. Suicide drama at KPCC officeFollowing the arrest, the Museum police did not get time to rest as the Congressmen in the city pressed the panic button, after a 55-year-old man attempted to commit suicide at the office of Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC), that too in front of KPCC chief Ramesh Chennithala. The man was identified as B Mohan Das, a resident of Anitha Bhavan at Cheruvaikkal, near Akkulam Boat Club. He attempted the extreme measure after the KPCC president allegedly snubbed him and refused to address his grievance after knocking on his door several times. According to Mohan Das, he was falsely implicated in a criminal case for resisting the activities of a local thug in his neighbourhood in 2008. The KPCC president and the local Congressmen also supported the thug, despite Mohan Das being a staunch supporter of the Congress party for years. He had been paying visits to the KPCC office ever since, but only to be ridiculed by the people at Indira Bhavan.Mohan Das, on Tuesday, poured kerosene all over his body and threatened to set himself ablaze for denying him justice. The Museum police immediately rushed to Indira Bhavan and took him into custody. The police said that Mohan Das was under the influence of alcohol during the incident. Leaning lamp postThe half-finished development works and the unexpected rain gave the Fire and Rescue Services a busy start on Tuesday after a sodium vapour lamp post, towering over 30 feet at Sree Moolam Club junction at Vazhuthacaud, started leaning. Even though the Fire and Rescue personnel rushed to the spot, the KSEB officials prevented them from removing the post as there existed a dispute between the Board and City Corporation over its location. However, the Fire and Rescue Personnel, who did not have the time to wait for the green signal from the authorities, disregarded the resistance put up by KSEB officials and went ahead and removed the post from the busy junction, as any delay could invited further trouble, like a traffic huge congestion. Flight makes emergency landingAn Air-India flight that made an emergency landing at Thiruvananthapuram International Airport led the authorities to press the panic button on Tuesday in the city. It was the flight AI 507, that arrived at the airport at 12.10 pm, that was involved in the incident. According to the airport authorities, the flight had to make an emergency landing after its the hydraulic landing gear developed a technical problem, that led to its failure in opening at the time of landing. The flight was carrying 123 passengers. The incident had the Fire and Rescue Services on its toes as rescue units from Thiruvananthapuram and Chackai units rushed to the airport immediately after being alerted by the airport authorities. But they returned as fast as they went as the airport authorities confirmed that the situation was out of danger by the time the Fire and Rescue personnel reached there. Trial heldAmidst all the chaos, the city police carried out measures to ensure the security of the President, who is arriving at the city at 10.30 am on Wednesday. They conducted a trial run of the convoy that is to accompany the President’s vehicle. The bomb detection and dog squads of the police too inspected the Kanakakkunnu Palace ground premises, where the President will lay the foundation stone of the zonal office of Indira Gandhi Open University.
