Hyderabad: Tension prevailed at Osmania university in Hyderabad after violent clashes between pro-Telangana students and police on Thursday night.

The students were demanding preferential treatment for candidates from the Telangana region in police recruitment exams.

The students went on rampage, pelting stones at the police and shops after the government refused to cancel the written test. They burnt effigies of Chief Minister K Rosaiah and Home Minister Sabita Indra Reddy.

10 buses were also damaged in the violence. Security personnel retaliated by lobbing tear gas shells to disperse the angry mob.

The TRS has condemned the police action and called for a Telangana bandh on Saturday.
