Shahjahanpur: Sand mafia in Uttar Pradesh is back in the news for causing the death of a police constable in Shahjahanpur district. The constable was killed for stopping illegal sand mining.
The incident occured when the constable tried to stop a tractor that was illegally mining sand. He was mowed down while he was trying to stop the driver of the tractor. The accused fled the scene after the incident and is now at large. The postmortem report is awaited.
"They do all the work at night as they can't indulge in such activities during the day. In order to escape from the hands of law, they would have killed him," a relative of the victim said.
Sand mafias had been in the news in 2013 when IAS officer Durga Nagpal was suspended for acting against them. An activist who tried to highlight the problem was also allegedly shot dead by the sand mafia.
