New Delhi: US citizen of Indian origin Pradeep K Khosla, the dean of Carnegie Mellon University's engineering college, has been named as the 8th chancellor of the University of California, San Diego.

Khosla, an alumnus of IIT-Kharagpur's electrical engineering department, will replace Marye Anne Fox in August 2012.

"UC San Diego has a bright future ahead, especially with Pradeep Khosla at the helm as the eighth chancellor of this extraordinary campus. He is a skilled leader, educator, researcher, and a champion of diversity. I am confident that he will further strengthen UC San Diego's status as a leading higher education and research university, and continue to enhance the campus' outreach and diversity initiatives," Marye Anne Fox said.

"We warmly welcome Chancellor-Designate Khosla to San Diego. The Chancellor's Community Advisory Board members look forward to working with him as we continue to strengthen ties between the campus and the community," said Carmen Sandoval, Chair of UC San Diego's Chancellor's Community Advisory Board.

"The selection of Pradeep Khosla was a superb choice for UC San Diego, and that his background fits the university and community perfectly," said Richard Atkinson, former University of California President and former UC San Diego Chancellor.
