BALASORE: The stage is set for the crucial user specific trial of 2,000-km plus range surface-to-surface Agni-II missile slated to be tested from a defence base off the Orissa coast on Monday. Defence sources said the personnel of Strategic Forces Command (SFC), a contingent specially raised to carry out the user specific tests of the missiles developed by DRDO, will conduct the test. The nuke-capable intermediate range ballistic missile (IRBM) will be launched from the Wheeler’s Island, a part of the Integrated Test Range (ITR), with the logistics support from the DRDO scientists and technical officers.A defence official said range integration has been completed and the missile integrated with the mobile launcher. “We are ready for the launch. If everything goes as planned and weather permitting, the missile will be launched between 9 am and 11 am. The countdown will start accordingly,” said the official. The test is being carried out in a real time situation. DRDO Chief Controller (Research and Development) for Life Sciences (LS) and International Cooperation (IC) W Selvamurthy said the test would be done by the user (Army) to gauge the effectiveness and performance of missile. The aim and objective of the test will be to achieve single digit accuracy reaching close to zero circular error probability (CEP).Scientists are leaving no stone unturned for the success of the test as the maiden test of 2,750-km range Agni-II (Prime), a newly developed missile in Agni series, had failed last year. In 2009, two consecutive trials of Agni-II too had failed to deliver desired results.
