THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: When the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) introduced half-hour cyclic load-shedding from April 1, a number of feeders in the city had been exempted. They included feeders serving the Medical College area and the high-security zone surrounding the Sree Padmanabha Swamy Temple. Now, a demand has been made that the Valiyathura ward, where the Thiruvananthapuram Airport is situated, too should be exempted.Valiyathura ward councillor Tony Oliver has written to Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, Power Minister Aryadan Mohammed and local MLA and Health Minister V S Sivakumar requesting them that his ward be exempted from the power restrictions. The airport being a high-security zone and frequented by foreign tourists, there is ample justification for the request, he said."In the past too, when load-shedding was imposed during the terms of the LDF and UDF governments, this area used to be exempted. It will not be the first time,’’ Oliver said."The international terminal is in the Chackai area and the domestic terminal at Valiyathura. Both areas should be exempted. Besides, the place is frequented by a lot of tourists, and it has to be ensured that they don’t fall prey to crime,’’ he said. The councillors also alleged that in many areas along the coast, the official half-hour load-shedding was being stretched to one hour and more daily.
