Varanasi: Aiming to counter the Congress' bid to project first-time MP Rahul Gandhi as a young dynamic leader in Uttar Pradesh, the BJP has sought to project his cousin, Varun Gandhi in a similar light.
The Opposition has taken the decision in an effort to infuse fresh blood into party leadership and enthuse its rank and file in the state.
The party's strategy to project Varun as an alternative to Rahul in UP, was apparent when Varun accompanied L K Advani to Varanasi and Ghazipur districts to participate in the party's agitation against the killing of BJP legislator Krishnanand Rai.
Varun was also given an opportunity to address party workers at the venue.
Sounding more combative than cousin Rahul, Varun equated the state's political situation with doomsday and slammed the prevailing law and order situation, saying it left a lot to be desired.
Referring to Rai's murder in Ghazipur district last week, Varun alleged that the UP government was targeting political rivals.
Describing Rai as a brave and inspirational leader, Varun urged party workers to take on the challenge and fight to ensure the ouster of the SP-led government.
"The BJP workers must fight injustice, corruption and criminalisation of politics in the state and ensure our party's return as the major political force in the state to make Uttar Pradesh 'Uttam' Pradesh," he said.
