The 24-year-old Baharom, a bronze medal winner in 2002, seized his opportunity with a commanding performance to win the gold.

Melbourne: Malaysia's Mohammad Faizal Baharom won the men's 56kg weightlifting gold medal at the Commonwealth Games on Thursday to maintain his country's domination of the event at this level.

India's Vicky Batta won silver while Malaysia's Matin Guntali took bronze.

Four years ago in Manchester, it was compatriot Aminul Hamizan Ibrahim who swept to three golds but his chances of defending the title at Melbourne were shattered after he failed a drugs test.

Instead, the 24-year-old Baharom, a bronze medal winner in 2002, seized his opportunity with a commanding performance with a snatch of 115kg followed by 135kg in clean and jerk.

Batta lifted 114kg and 131kg while the 39-year-old Guntali, with lifts of 107kg and 131kg, took third after coming out of retirement to take part in the tournament.
