VIJAYAWADA: Several low-lying areas in Vijayawada and many villages in Guntur district have been inundated due to heavy discharge of flood water from the Nagarjuna Sagar and Prakasam Barrage. Flood water entered over 100 houses in Ferry near Ibrahimpatnam. The residents had to shift their household articles to prevent them from being washed away. M Srinivasa Rao, Nadikuditi Sitaramaiah, Bale Varalakshmi said they feared their houses might get submerged with heavy floods.Irrigation officials released 4.06 lakh cusecs of water from Prakasam Barrage by 7 p.m. which is likely to reach 5 lakh cusec by Saturday morning. With the discharge level likely to increase by Saturday as the flood water released from Nagarjuna Sagar reaches the Prakasam barrage, officials are making arrangements to shift people to rehabilitation centres.Meanwhile, minister for Secondary Education Yelamanchili Ravi visited Ramalingeswara Nagar and expressed concern over increasing encroachments in the Krishna river bed. He added that officials have to find a permanent solution to the inundation of houses every year. Normal life was paralysed with 40 villages in the river bank mandals getting waterlogged in Guntur district. Crops in more than 5000 acres were submerged.
