BHUBANESWAR: Violence in the run-up to the students union elections has forced another college in the City to seek cancellation of the polls. A day after a student of BJB Autonomous College was attacked, the College on Thursday recommended to the Higher Education Department that the polls be cancelled. The Staff Council of the premier college met in the afternoon to take stock of the situation and decided against the elections. The resolution, accordingly, has been sent to the Department for its final call.On Wednesday evening, a Plus Three student was brutally attacked while he was working on the campaign for the ensuing polls. He sustained multiple injuries.“Things went too far on Wednesday night. We have been monitoring the situation for the last week or so. The friction between different groups, however, has reached a tipping point where we felt it will be difficult to hold elections without risking life and property,” Principal Dushmant Sahu said. The BJB Autonomous College has a strength of 6,000 students. Over the last week, the college had seen clashes among groups, which allegedly owed allegiance to a political party. In fact, campus election in Maharshi College of Natural Law was cancelled last week after violence was reported on the campus. During the same time, BJB College too had witnessed similar incidents and the authorities had mulled watching the situation for a week before taking any decision. The police had to intervene to defuse tension at least thrice but to no avail. While the staff council of the college has passed a resolution for cancellation of election, Sahu said, nomination through selection could take place as advised by the Lyngdoh Commission.Following the unrest, the Commissionerate of Police is keeping a close watch on the campuses of other educational institutions in the City.
