THIRUVANANATHAPURAM: The Opposition staged a walkout in the Assembly on Friday alleging that the UDF Government had violated prison rules by granting remission to former Minister R Balakrishna Pillai, who was sentenced to one-year imprisonment in Idamalayar corruption case.Taking up the issue in the House as a special mention, Opposition Leader V S Achuthanandan said the government had violated the prison rules to release Pillai, who is a former Minister and whose son is a Minister in the present Cabinet.Replying to the submission, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy said that the government had not done anything which was illegal and the decision to release Pillai was in accordance with the law. “The government is always transparent and the decision to release Pillai along with 137 other prisoners, was through a government remission order on November 1,” he said.Hitting back at the Opposition, Chandy said that the previous LDF Government had also granted remission to persons convicted in corruption cases and even released those who were sentenced to life for murder. He alleged that the LDF Government’s decision to grant remission to those jailed in the Jayakrishnan murder case was a result of a conspiracy between the RSS and the CPM. For this, he said that two RSS men were released as a result of the secret pact between the RSS and the CPM.Deputy Leader of Opposition Kodiyeri Balakrishnan challenged the Chief Minister to prove his allegation.V S Achuthanandan said that the Chief Minister was coming up with baseless allegations to divert the Pillai issue. The Opposition then staged a walkout.
